Nervous Tissue Basics

Nervous tissue is an excitable tissue meaning that with certain stimuli it the nerve cells change their membrane charge.  This charge change is the way that signals travel along neurons (nerve cells).  Nervous tissue is composed of neurons and supporting cells called neuroglial cells.  In the histology images below you can see the neurons as large stained cells.  You can only see the nuclei of the neuroglial cells.  This is not the only form of nervous tissue by the way, but it is useful for an introduction to nervous tissue.
